The Indiana Arts Commission has awarded grants to several Brown County artists and art organizations for Arts in the Parks projects in 2018.
Other artists and organizations from outside the county also were awarded grants to do projects in Brown County.
Anabel Hopkins, $3,000 to paint lakes and falls at Patoka Lake and Clifty Falls State Park. Hopkins will conduct a children’s workshop on Earth Day, April 22 at Patoka Lake. Then, in May, she will paint and conduct an all-ages workshop at the lake. At Clifty Falls, Hopkins will paint June 29 and conduct a workshop for adults on June 30. Paintings will be donated to the sites for their fund-raising events.
Charlene Marsh, $3,000 to paint “en plein air” at the beach. Marsh will travel to Starve Hollow State Recreation Area and to Monroe Lake in Paynetown to demonstrate her technique. Visitors will have an opportunity to try plein air painting after her demonstrations.
Daren Pitts Redman, $2,972 to celebrate Selma Steele’s textile collection at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. Redman will lead two workshops on June 3 and July 1, teaching guests how to dye fabrics and thread-paint a photo on fabric to take home.
Patricia Rhoden Bartels, $3,000 for painting demonstrations focused on interpreting spring at Brown County State Park and the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. Bartels will emphasize art history in the park during the April Wildflower Foray. During Earth Day celebrations, environmental issues will be the focus while children paint along with Bartels at the T.C. Steele site.
Joseph Alexander Clancy Clements of Monroe County, $2,340 to perform May 20, July 14 and Oct. 6 at T.C. Steele State Historic Site in Brown County. Clements will play traditional music of 18th and 19th century Indiana using less commonly known instruments and he will describe the role of music in Indiana in the past.
Paula Jane Chambers and the Hudsucker Posse, both of Monroe County, also received grants to perform at T.C. Steele.
Two arts organizations also received Regional Initiative grants for arts support: the Brown County Art Guild Inc. for $7,779 and Brown County Playhouse Management for $9,724.
