Letter: An invitation to the DNR to hike Grandma Barnes

To the editor:

The Dec. 6 article at the top of the opinion page, “DNR: State’s forests being carefully managed,” made me laugh. Really?

Obviously DNR Director Cameron Clark hasn’t seen the mess that was left in the Yellowwood State Forest area of about 300 acres that lies between Morrison and Grandma Barnes roads.

While most of the attention lately has been focused on the controversial Low Gap timber sale in the northwest part of the county, logging companies have been in other sections of the county where they’ve harvested hundreds, if not thousands of trees.

If you live on Tulip Tree Road, Dollsberry Lane, Grandma Barnes or Morrison roads, you’ve probably heard the chainsaws and seen the semi trucks loaded down with trees, and the muddy mess left behind with piles and piles of tops left to rot. If you are adventurous, get out and walk some of these areas or take a drive down Dubois Ridge Road. It looks like a tornado hit these areas.

Folks, if this is science-based forest management, I’ll eat my hiking boots!

If you’re a hunter, a hiker, a tourist or a caring nature lover, please help us save these precious areas. Go to saveyellowwood.com or call Gov. Eric Holcomb at 317-232-4567.

Also, an open invitation to DNR Director Cameron Clark: come on down to my neighborhood. I’d like to take you for a little hike in the woods.

Dave Gore, Grandma Barnes Road
