Grace Jackson is that student. The daughter of Thomas and Carolyn Jackson, she intends to study public policy, according to the Brown County Community Foundation, which awards the scholarship annually.

In addition to full tuition, Jackson also will receive a $900 annual stipend for required books and equipment.

Twelve local students applied for the Brown County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship.

The scholarship committee scored applications based on scholastic profile, personal recommendations, school activities, community activities, a personal goals statement and an essay. Once finalists were selected, they were asked to write an impromptu essay and then interview.

Finalists also included Corinna Cagle, Hallee Miller and Abraham Oliver.

If, for some reason, the winner turns down the scholarship, an alternate will be selected from the finalists.

Jackson was to learn at 4 p.m. today that she was the recipient.

In high school, Jackson has been involved in drama, tennis, volleyball and school leadership positions and was on the homecoming court, among many other activities.

All of the Lilly Scholar finalists were graduates of the Brown County Junior High School We the People program, and were on the BCJHS team that won a national We the People civics contest championship in 2013-14.

Lilly Endowment scholarships are awarded throughout Indiana, with 143 to be given this year. The scholarship has been given to 4,340 people to date, not including this year’s recipients, the community foundation reported.
