Letter: Replacement sign in town not doing job

0

To the editor:

It has come to my attention that several weeks ago, for some unknown reason, the stop sign at the corner of East Main Street (Helmsburg Road) and Johnson Street in Nashville was removed and replaced with a very homemade, hillbilly version of a stop sign on PVC pipe that sits only a couple feet off of the ground in the road.

Yesterday, I witnessed a car speeding through the intersection at about 30 mph without pausing. The sign can not be seen at all when a car is parked on that side of the road.

Not only is it just a matter of time before an accident occurs, possibly with injuries, but I would presume this is a clear legal liability for the county and town of Nashville.

(Letter copied to county and town officials and sheriff.)

Mike Hater, Nashville

Editor’s note: This area is in the town’s jurisdiction. Nashville Chief Administrator Phyllis Carr responded that an “on-call person” had been called to replace the sign.
