Police and emergency personnel responded to multiple crashes involving injuries this past weekend.

FRIDAY, Oct. 13

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Eggebrecht responded to a crash on Sprunica Road near Upper Salt Creek just after 6:30 p.m.

His report said that a  car with heavy front end damage was facing west on Sprunica Road near a tree that also had damage.

The driver, Brandon R. Callahan, 23, of Fir Drive, told police he was on his way “from Grey Wolf Drive to Grey Wolf Drive,” the report said. Callahan said he thought he was on State Road 46 and he was unable to tell police how the crash happened.

Eggebrecht reported smelling alcohol on Callahan. He told the officer he had four beers “several hours ago,” the report said. A breath test showed his blood-alcohol level to be 0.22, almost three times the legal limit.

Deputy Austin Schonfeld reported finding a cellphone on the ground that had a partial text typed on it, the report states.

At press time, Callahan had not been charged with any crime.

He was taken to a hospital by ambulance due to pain in his entire body. It is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt.

SATURDAY, Oct. 15

The next afternoon at around 12:15 p.m., police responded to the first of two crashes that would occur on on Clay Lick Road that weekend.

Allen J. Aitken, 53, of Columbus, told police he was driving his motorcycle east on Clay Lick near Gatesville Road when he went around a vehicle that had stopped in the road.

Aitken drove off the south side of the road, the police report said. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance for back pain. He was wearing a helmet.

Aitken’s passenger was not injured. His motorcycle was towed.

About four hours later, police and emergency personnel responded to Salt Creek Road near State Road 46 East for another motorcycle crash.

When Eggebrecht arrived on scene, one motorcycle rider — Charles A. Walker, 27, of New Castle — had already been taken to a hospital on another motorcycle, the accident report said.

The rider of the second motorcycle, Matthew D. Burge, 45, of New Castle, told police said he was riding with Walker and other friends on Salt Creek Road. Burge and other riders crossed State Road 46 East and were waiting on Walker to cross. When Walker crossed, he struck the rear of Burge’s motorcycle, causing him to be ejected and slide across the ground, the report said.

Walker was taken to the hospital for treatment of shoulder/upper arm pain. He was wearing a helmet.

SUNDAY, Oct. 15

On Sunday, a woman and three children were injured in a crash on Clay Lick Road near Old State Road 46 after she swerved to avoid a collision with a tour bus.

When Eggebrecht arrived, he found Jennifer Krueger, 33, of Morgantown, trapped inside her 2003 Dodge Durango. Firefighters were able to extricate Krueger and she was taken by medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

Three children in the vehicle were taken to Columbus Regional Hospital by ambulance to have minor injuries checked, the report said.

A witness told police she was northbound on Clay Lick Road behind a large tour bus. She said the bus was in the middle of the county road when Krueger approached southbound. The witness stated Krueger ran off the road to avoid a head-on collision with the bus.

The driver of the tour bus told police he saw Krueger’s vehicle come south “too fast” and that he saw Krueger run off the road into a tree that was directly in front of him, the report said.

The driver said he stopped briefly before continuing to pick up his passengers.

Krueger and the children were all wearing seat belts.
