ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A 34-year-old man is charged with first- and- second degree murder in a man’s shooting death at an Anchorage apartment.

Police say they were notified by a caller Wednesday afternoon that Anthony Aumua walked into an Eagle River church and admitted to the shooting Wednesday in the 800 block of west 29th Place. Police say responding officers set up a perimeter and evacuated the church, then Aumua left the church peacefully and was taken into custody.

The victim, 46-year-old Jerry Amos, was found dead in the living room of a second-floor apartment. Police say witnesses were in the apartment and gave conflicting reports of what occurred.

Police say Aumua admitted fatally shooting the man.

Aumua is represented by the Public Defender Agency, which declined to comment Friday.
