A Bloomington man serving time in the Brown County jail has been charged with a Level 5 felony for allegedly assaulting a jail officer in August.

On Aug. 5, Robert Gilman, 30, was placed on lockdown in the jail for not obeying jail staff and rules, a probable cause affidavit by Det. Brian Shrader with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department states.

Gilman notified jail staff that he had a possible broken hand, because he punched a cell door. EMS arrived about an hour and a half later and recommended Gilman go to the hospital to get X-rays.

He was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital by jail staff and returned about three hours later with his right wrist in a soft cast, the affidavit states.

When told he was being placed into a cell, Gilman refused to cooperate, and jail staff asked for more help. Nashville Police Officer Keith Lawson arrived to help place Gilman in the cell, but Gilman continued to resist and tried to kick the cell door. He was placed on the floor and officers exited the cell, the affidavit states.

Gilman began screaming and banging his head on the cell door and pipe chase door. Shrader said he watched video that showed Gilman repeatedly running his head into the wall with “extreme force,” according to the affidavit.

Jail staff entered the cell again with Deputy Colton Magner to place him into a padded cell so he couldn’t harm himself, the affidavit states.

When they entered, Gilman “immediately postured himself in a fighting stance” and clenched his fist. Other officers “jumped at” Gilman, but he was able to get an arm free and elbow the first jail officer, the probable cause affidavit said.

Gilman was eventually wrestled to the ground and placed in a restraint chair in a padded cell. Gilman then scooted his chair to one of the locks in the cell and began banging his head on the lock, the report said.

He was charged Sept. 13 with battery resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer, a Level 5 felony.

Gilman has been serving a year in jail for four misdemeanors last April, including domestic battery and battery resulting in bodily injury. He was charged with a new misdemeanor and a felony in May after police said he seriously injured another inmate after picking a fight.
