SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio police officer is hospitalized in stable condition after an SUV slammed into his patrol car while he was diverting traffic from another unrelated crash.

Police spokesman Officer Doug Greene says charges are pending against the driver of the SUV which “smelled strongly of alcohol” after the early Sunday morning wreck. The driver is hospitalized in serious condition.

Greene says the officer was sitting in his car, with emergency lights on, when the SUV plowed into the patrol car. Greene also says passenger in the SUV was uncooperative with police and has refused a trip to a hospital.
