ROCKLAND, Maine — Maine’s annual celebration of its signature sea creature is drawing to a close.
The 70th Maine Lobster Festival is wrapping up Sunday in Rockland after five days of lobster-themed music, games, parades — and lots of melted butter.
Sunday’s festivities include the cod fish carry contest and a lobster-eating contest. There’s also a crate race in Rockland Harbor.
The celebration of all things lobster began in the late 1940s when residents looked to revive the type of summer festivities the area was known for prior to World War II. Festival-goers typically consume about 20,000 pounds of lobster during the event.
