MONTICELLO, Maine — Police in Maine say an ambulance struck a utility pole in Monticello along U.S. Highway 1, causing a large power outage.

Police say the ambulance driver, identified as Nicholas Pelletier, fell asleep, drifted off the road and struck the pole early Friday. The pole broke away from its base and a power transformer dislodged and fell to the ground. Power lines became tangled in trees.

Neither Pelletier nor the EMT in the vehicle, were hurt. The ambulance was damaged and towed away.

The highway was shut down for about three hours because of power lines in the road. Power has been restored; it wasn’t immediately known how many outages there were.
