ROOT, N.Y. — Authorities say a 24-year-old man’s body has been recovered from the Erie Canal in the Mohawk Valley after he fell into the waterway while fishing and drowned.

Montgomery County Sheriff Michael Amato says Joshua McSpirit was fishing with a friend before dawn Tuesday at Lock 13 on the Mohawk River in the town of Root, 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of Albany. Amato says McSpirit slipped off an embankment and fell into the turbulent water. He says the friend saw McSpirit slip under the water.

McSpirit didn’t know how to swim and wasn’t wearing a life jacket.

A fire department dive team recovered his body.

Police say McSpirit was from Gloversville in neighboring Fulton County.
