WESTERLY, R.I. — One man is dead and another is facing a manslaughter charge after an altercation in a Rhode Island parking lot over the weekend.

Alexander Brown, of Hopkinton, was released on $2,000 cash bail at his arraignment Monday in the death of 49-year-old John Gardiner, of Westerly.

Police responding to reports of a disturbance at the shopping plaza parking lot in Westerly at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday found Gardiner unconscious. He was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.

The 23-year-old Brown was taken into custody shortly after police arrived on the scene.

Police say the men did not know each other prior to their physical confrontation. What sparked the confrontation was not disclosed.

Brown’s attorney called the death an “unfortunate incident” and said his client is “a good person.”
