Police: Man used stolen truck to take boat

A Brown County man who was charged in an auto parts theft ring and a marijuana grow operation last month is facing new charges, this time for allegedly taking a relative’s truck without permission and then using it to steal a pontoon boat.

Joseph D. Patrick, 34, was interviewed May 17 about the boat, which was stolen out of Bartholomew County. During that interview he told police that he drove his grandparents’ truck to where the boat was parked, another man got out and dropped it on the hitch and they drove off, a police report said.

Patrick told police that he didn’t know they were stealing the boat.

The truck owners told police that Patrick didn’t have permission to take it from their barn while they were on vacation. They said he knew where the key was hidden.

Patrick was charged June 6 with conversion, a Level 6 felony. He was arrested on the auto theft charges May 15 on a property where several trucks were found in various stages of being dismantled, and was charged May 17 with a felony when police reported finding marijuana plants in his camper.
