Michael S. “Mike” Johnson, 73, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, June 6, 2017, at his home in Nashville.

He was born in Indianapolis on Nov. 12, 1943, to the late Seldon and Irene (Mosley) Johnson. Mike married Carolyn J. “Janie” (Vaught) Johnson on Oct. 27, 1962 in Franklin, Kentucky; she preceded him in death Sept. 17, 2010, after 48 years of being his best friend and wife.

Mike was a 1962 graduate of Brown County High School, part of the first class to graduate from the new high school. He enjoyed turkey and deer hunting, go-cart racing at Hickory Ridge and in Kentucky, as well as watching a good western movie. He will be remembered for always wanting to lend a hand and help others. Mike loved having his family nearby, making it easy to spend time together.

He was a member of the International Operators Union, Local 103 in Indianapolis for more than 40 years. Mike retired in 2009 as owner and operator of Johnson & Son Excavating in Brown County. Prior to that, he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Pearson’s Construction and CPE Mechanical, both of Indianapolis.

Mike is survived by his children, Michelle (Gary) Fox, Tina (Robert) Finley, Mary Ross and Michael Ray (Michelle) Johnson, all of Nashville; siblings, Paul Johnson of Franklin, Marie (Sam) Bryant of Edinburgh and Pat Thompson of North Vernon; grandchildren, Bobby Fox, Justin, Erica and Araea Finley, Ashley Hamilton, Austin and Shawn Johnson, Robert and Lacey Ross, Bo Nolen and Cole Hoard; and great-grandchildren, Aiden, Landon, Mollie, Conner and Aubrey.

He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Samuel “P.J.” Johnson, on Aug. 3, 2005.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 8 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Goshen Cemetery, Brown County.
