HELMSBURG — A Mooresville man was flown from a crash scene involving two motorcycles on Railroad Road May 29.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on Railroad Road near Oak Ridge Road. When Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Stargell arrived, Jackson Township Volunteer firefighters were treating Christopher N. Brown, 28, of Mooresville, who was lying on the road with leg injuries.

The second driver, Ralph Johnson, 57, of Indianapolis, was sitting on an embankment on the north side of the road and was also being treated by firefighters, Stargell’s report said.

Brown was flown out because he had a broken leg and collarbone, the report said.

Stargell’s report said Brown was westbound on Railroad Road when he went left of center around a right curve, locking up his brakes. Then he crashed into Johnson’s motorcycle.

Johnson was eastbound in a left curve and also locked up his brakes, the report said.

Two witnesses who were behind Johnson going east reported seeing Brown lose control before crossing the center line and striking Johnson, the report said. A third witness told Stargell that Brown took the corner “way too fast” and overshot his lane, the report said.

Johnson was treated at the scene for a possible broken nose and an abrasion to his right arm.

Brown was wearing a helmet; Johnson was not, the report said.

Both motorcycles were towed.

This is the third crash that’s resulted in injuries on Railroad Road since it has been used as a detour due to a bridge closure on State Road 135 North. Three other property damage crashes have occurred since April 3.

The speed limit on Railroad Road is 30 mph while it is being used as a detour.

Brown’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with his medical expenses: gf.me/u/pw4rg.
