Softball player throws perfect game

Q&A with Emma Summers, Brown County freshman softball player

Summers threw a perfect game, striking out 13, in a 3-0 win April 8 at Cascade. That was a follow-up to a one-hitter 10-0 win against Eastern Greene on April 4 and a strong hitting performance April 7 in a win against Columbus East.

Her performance: Altogether, I thought it was pretty good. I was nervous to start out, because freshman year starting varsity, it was nerveracking. But I think I pulled through and did pretty well.

Do you do anything special to prepare? Other than the warmup, I pray before every game.

Favorite drink: Dr. Pepper

Favorite food: French fries

Favorite book: “What’s Left of Me”

Favorite class: Geometry

Role model: Probably Jackie Traina. She pitched for Alabama and does a bunch of charity stuff. She went to Japan and did stuff there. She won a national championship, and that’s what I want to do.

Best advice: “Don’t give up, because I never thought I’d get to where I am now. And then I got here, and it took a lot of work, but I just stuck it out.

Athletics goal: I want to play (NCAA Division I) softball, which is a huge goal, but I want to get there. I think I can if I work hard enough, and I want to pitch another perfect game.

If you could travel anywhere: I would probably want to go on a mission trip to somewhere like the Dominican Republic. Or if there was a crisis somewhere, I would want to go there. You see a lot of people go on mission trips there, and knowing that you could help someone is what I want to do.
