Our Folks: Lillian Chaney to celebrate 100th birthday

MORGANTOWN — Lillian Lucille Chaney will turn 100 April 12. Her family will host a party from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 9 at the Masonic Lodge No. 358. 6729 S. County Line Road at State Road 135 in Morgantown.

Food will be provided and the Banister Blue Grass Band will play from 3 to 5 p.m. The family asks that guests bring a favorite story about Chaney or a picture of her to share.

Chaney has been a resident of Johnson and Morgan counties for many years and is well-known at senior citizen organizations in Johnson, Morgan and Brown counties, said her daughter-in-law, Karen Rogers. She still loves to dance and she’s a “very competitive” Euchre player, Rogers said.

Lillian Lucille Oetzel was born April 12, 1917, in Campbell County, Kentucky. Her twin brother was Bill Oetzel. She has outlived her parents, George Richard and Julia Oetzel; her two brothers, Bill and Austin; her seven sisters, Dora, Ora, Nellie, Geneva, Lorena, Georgia and Nina; her husband, William Everett Chaney; and their three sons, Ben Willard, Rodney Dale and J. Daryel.

She has three grandsons, Bret Allan, Ty Donivan and Clayton Daniel Chaney; 11 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and several great-nieces and -nephews.

Rogers said Chaney still lives independently, and “even at 100, when someone says, ‘Let’s go!’ she’s ready.”
