Letters: Keep Brown County Beautiful: The first year

0

To the editor:

A year ago, Keep Brown County Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful was begun.

Several years prior to this, the Brown County Garden Club saw a need to pick up the litter that had been discarded on our roads. Each year hundreds of miles of roads were cleaned, but the litter was quick to accumulate after each pickup.

It was decided that more must be done, and with the help of a generous donation from the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau, a board was formed and Keep Brown County Beautiful was started.

This affiliation gave our group access to resources and strategies from the national organization.

Litter pickup continues, but in addition, recycle containers were provided for Deer Run and assistance was provided to a homeowner for yard cleanup.

The group also took part in the Beautification Award judging in cooperation with the Brown County Chamber of Commerce and the Brown County Garden Club. Members provided trash removal for the Brown County Fair and picked up litter on the fairgrounds daily.

The board is grateful for the financial support it has received from the Brown County Community Foundation, the CVB, South Central Indiana REMC and the Nashville Town Council as well as private donations.

Looking forward, the board is planning activities which will engage the people in our community to work together to create a clean, beautiful place to live and work. There will also be educational programs for the community which stress the value of keeping our beautiful community clean, recycling and environmental issues.

On April 22, we will participate in The Great American Cleanup. Volunteers will help with cleaning and beautification projects in town and throughout the county. There will be a picnic lunch to thank the Adopt a Road participants and for all who volunteer to help with the day’s activities. There will also be a poster contest for children.

Please consider joining us. You can register for this event by emailing [email protected].
