Helmsburg General Store opens

HELMSBURG — If the “open” sign’s lit, come on in.

The Helmsburg General Store doesn’t have all products stocked or priced yet, but owners Leonard and Sharon Richey went ahead and opened on March 25 because their neighbors were asking them to, Sharon said.

She said hours have been sporadic — the latest she’s opened is 10:30 and the earliest she’s closed is 4 — but that’s not the way it’s always going to be. She said she expects to have regular hours figured out sometime in April and have a proper grand opening.

In the meantime, folks are welcome to stop in for some bait, beer, wine and other miscellaneous items, and to meet the new owners. Sharon expected they’d have cigarettes by this weekend and they’re also looking into selling Brown County Democrats.

The couple, from Indianapolis, bought the store from longtime owner Karen Sooy last summer and have spent months redoing the interior. “It’s getting there,” Sharon said.
