A Bloomington man was killed Monday afternoon in a head-on collision on State Road 46 West that stopped traffic for hours.

Joseph E. Dusard, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene by Brown County Coroner Earl Piper, a press release from the Brown County Sheriff’s Department states.

Emergency personnel responded to the collision west of the former Ski World at around 2:40 p.m. Both vehicles had severe damage, the release said.

Dusard was the westbound driver. Eastbound driver Timothy Ellison, 60, of Brown County, was taken by ambulance to Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was released, the press release said.

Dusard was trapped in the vehicle and had to be removed by firefighters. EMS and a doctor on the scene tried to resuscitate Dusard, but they were unsuccessful, the release said.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts and both airbags deployed.

State Road 46 was closed for several hours in both directions as the scene was cleaned up.

The accident is still under investigation by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Gregory Pittman and Piper.
