Visitor arrested on drunken driving charge

A Tuscaloosa, Alabama, man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after being pulled over for a traffic violation in Brown County.Matthew L. Hicks, 27, was stopped at about 1 a.m. Feb. 26 by Brown County Sgt. Bill Southerland on McLary Road.

Southerland reported smelling alcohol on Hicks, that his speech was slurred, his eyes were red/watery, his balance was unsteady and that Hicks had an “argumentative” attitude.

A breath test showed his blood-alcohol level to be 0.22, more than three times the legal limit. Hicks refused a chemical test.

He was charged Feb. 27 with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor; resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor; and refusal to submit to a breath or chemical test, a Class C infraction.
