Five Brown County students became school champions by winning their building’s spelling bees.
Brown County Junior High School
The Brown County Junior High School had its spelling bee Jan. 31. After 20 rounds, seventh-grader Samantha Smith took the title over five other students, spelling “vengeance,” teacher Brad Baughman said.
She went on to place fourth in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee for south-central Indiana in Bloomington on Feb. 11.
Brown County Intermediate School
More than 20 fifth- and sixth-grade Brown County Intermediate School students participated in the school’s spelling bee Jan. 13. Sixth-grader Zoe Cox won first place and sixth-grader Izzy Williamson took second.
Cox competed in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 11.
Helmsburg Elementary School
Fourteen Helmsburg Elementary School students competed in the school’s spelling bee Jan. 20. Third-grader Kylie Root was named the winner.
Third-grader Natasha Robertson won second and last year’s school champion, Carley Trapp, took third place.
Root competed in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 11. She was the youngest participant, according to Helmsburg’s website.
Sprunica Elementary School
Third-grader Rosalyn McGrayel won the Sprunica Elementary School spelling bee, earning a spot at the regional bee in Bloomington.
McGrayel competed in the regional Feb. 11. She was eliminated in the second round on “coyote,” Principal Abbie Oliver said.
Van Buren Elementary School
Eleven students competed in the Van Buren Elementary School spelling bee Jan. 19.
Third-grader Alayna Jacobus won and third-grader Eli Wrightsman took second.
Jacobus competed in the regional bee in Bloomington on Feb. 11.
