Fourth-graders win geography bees

Van Buren Elementary

Van Buren Elementary School’s National Geographic Geography Bee took place Dec. 9. Fourth-grade students participated in a preliminary round in their social studies classes to determine who the finalists would be to advance to the schoolwide bee.

The winner was Codey Burberry. Co-runners-up were Sawyer Kelp, Caleb Clifford and Josh Redmon.

Burberry will take an online qualifying test to determine which students will compete at the state level, teacher Jayne Jones said.

Other finalists were Sophie Mathis, Josh Woodard, Lilly VanNess, Isabelle Crone, Shauna Custard, River Ford and Megan Cumberledge.

The national championship of the National Geographic Geography Bee will take place in May in Washington, D.C. First prize is a $50,000 college scholarship.

Sprunica Elementary

Geography Bee winners at Sprunica Elementary School were all fourth-graders. Ella Jackson won first place, Madilyn Hawley won second place and third place went to Owen East.
