Pet Tails: Saving the animals, one chocolate at a time

How can you improve on autumn in Nashville, strolling through town, enjoying the beautiful colors and getting a jump-start on holiday shopping?

How about adding chocolate?

This year’s ninth annual Chocolate Walk to benefit the animals at the Brown County Humane Society will be Saturday, Nov. 12. Every year, we’re so excited to see what treats the participating shops will create for the event. The variety has been endless — creamy, rich fudge; melt-in-your-mouth truffles; delicious hot chocolate; decadent chocolate cake; mini chocolate cupcakes; velvety, smooth ice cream; crunchy, caramel-chocolate popcorn; chewy, chocolaty cookies; mouth-watering toffee; and even chocolate-covered jerky.

Attendees purchase a ticket to the Chocolate Walk which allows them to visit each of the participating shops and restaurants to receive a scrumptious chocolate surprise.

The best thing is, besides getting all of that delicious chocolate, 100 percent of proceeds go to care for homeless dogs and cats. The shelter cares for more than 600 animals a year, and this is one of the biggest fundraisers for the critters. You get to enjoy all that chocolate, guilt-free, because you are saving lives.

The participating shops and restaurants generously donate their time and their chocolate creations to show they care about homeless pets.

In addition to the chocolate stops, local businesses sponsor the event. Their support covers the cost of the event, so that all ticket sales benefit the animals.

Come join us for this year’s Chocolate Walk and find out for yourself what delectable delights will be offered to ticketholders!

Be sure to stop at the courthouse lawn and see some of the orphaned dogs that you are helping to save.

Tickets are available online at bchumane.org or by calling 812-327-3016. They can also be purchased at the Brown County Humane Society animal shelter, 128 State Road 135 South; Brown County Art Gallery, 1 Artist Drive; or the Visitors Center at 10 N. Van Buren St.

Tickets are $20 until Nov 1. From Nov 1 to 12, they will be $25. Tickets will sell out ahead of time, so buy them early.

Featured pet

Smokey Joe is a favorite at the shelter. Not only is he beautiful, with his soft, caramel-colored coat and his deep, soulful eyes, but he’s a gentle and happy boy, too. He’s happy to be with you, getting belly rubs and hugs or plenty of head scratches and ear rubs. He also enjoys play time, having a tug-of-war with the rope toy, or running in the yard with his shelter buddies. Smokey Joe is a wonderful, all-around dog who fits in almost any crowd. Come and meet him at the shelter.
