RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Authorities in Southern California say a suspect fired five times on police during a chase, but only a patrol car was hit and no one was hurt.

Police say the suspect was captured on foot Tuesday night as officers swarmed a residential neighborhood.

Corona police Sgt. Paul Mercado says the chase began when an officer from his department tried to pull over a van that matched a description from a shooting last month.

The van fled and led police on a 4-mile chase.

Riverside police Lt. Christian Dinko says the man opened fire during the chase, blowing out the van’s rear window and hitting the Corona officer’s car twice.

The man exchanged fire with Riverside police as he crashed the van then ran.

Dinko says an AR-15 rifle cut down to the size of a handgun was found afterward.
