LEWISTON, Maine — Libertarian vice presidential candidate Bill Weld told a group of local leaders in Lewiston that Republican nominee Donald Trump’s “rant” against Somali immigrants is unacceptable.

The Sun Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2dRENHJ ) the former Massachusetts governor called the attacks “vintage Donald Trump” and claimed the businessman was just trying to set group against group.

Weld was in town on Saturday as part of a weekend swing through New England. He and running-mate Gary Johnson last held a rally in Lewiston two months ago.

Pushing the Libertarian agenda, Weld called Maine “friendly territory” and touched on his past advocating for LGBT rights during the 1990s.

Weld also pointed to Johnson’s longtime support of legalizing marijuana as further example of the candidates’ comfortability in “taking the heat and standing for our positions.”
