LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to more than 57 years for killing two people during a Lafayette home invasion and armed robbery last year.
Tippecanoe County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Busch on Thursday gave Jacob Eugene Guffey a decade less than the recommended 67 years in prison. The judge took Guffey’s young age and upbringing by drug-addicted parents into account, but told Guffey “being a victim yourself gives you no cause or right to make others a victim.”
Guffey pleaded guilty in June to killing 36-year-old Aaron Hunter Jr. and 46-year-old Terry Smith. Another man, 34-year-old Matthew Oertel, received a 55-year prison sentence last month for the same crime after pleading guilty in July.
Guffey apologized to the victims’ families, saying he takes “full responsibility” for his actions.
