GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Denise Juneau says electing her to Congress would change the discourse about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual people.

The Democrat made her comments Wednesday night in a debate against Republican U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke and Libertarian Rick Breckenridge before a capacity crowd at Great Falls College.

Each candidate was asked how he or she would protect the rights of gay and lesbian people.

Juneau said she is the state’s first openly gay federal candidate and would be the first American Indian woman to be elected to Congress.

Zinke said it’s not his right to dictate what people think or do. Audience members booed when he went on to say that he supports Juneau if she wants to be lesbian, Muslim or whatever.

The debate was Zinke and Juneau’s third this election season.
