MILWAUKEE — A 21-year-old Milwaukee man is charged with fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot of a hospital as she arrived for work.

Prosecutors charged Pierre Douglas Gardner with first-degree reckless homicide in the shooting of Nya Yesmine Nicole Hammond.

Hammond left Gardner three weeks earlier, citing domestic abuse. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ( ) reports the couple has a 3-year-old child.

According to the complaint, Hammond was arriving for her work shift with a cleaning service at Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin in Glendale early Monday when she was shot. The complaint says Gardner was parked in the lot waiting for her.

Milwaukee police Friday found the car from the parking lot running unoccupied in an alley. Hammond’s relatives identified the vehicle as Gardner’s.

Gardner was jailed Saturday on $500,000 bail.
