BEND, Ore. — An Oregon community college student has been found guilty except for insanity for stabbing his roommate.
The Bulletin reports (http://bit.ly/2cCcGMz ) that 24-year-old Eric Norgaard was convicted, except for insanity, of attempted murder, assault and unlawful use of a weapon for an attack on Halloween night in 2014.
Prosecutors said Norgaard stabbed his Central Oregon Community College roommate, then-18-year-old Jim Briles, at least 14 times. Briles had two collapsed lungs.
Defense attorney Todd Grover argued Tuesday that Norgaard’s psychiatric problems and history of hearing voices left him unable to control his actions.
Norgaard will not serve a prison sentence and will instead be sent to the state Psychiatric Security Review Board to determine the appropriate combination of treatment, civil commitment or supervised release.
