FALL RIVER, Mass. — A Fall River man has been convicted of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend during a fight in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day last year.

Jeffery Souza was convicted Tuesday by a Bristol Superior Court jury of second-degree murder and firearms charges in the Jan. 1, 2015 death of Kyle Brady.

The 28-year-old Souza is being held pending sentencing on Nov. 7.

Prosecutors say the pair had exchanged hundreds of angry text messages in the months before the deadly confrontation. They arranged to meet for a fist fight at about 1 a.m., but Souza brought an illegal gun and shot the 28-year-old Brady once in the chest.

Souza’s attorney has claimed the shooting was in self-defense.
