CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man wanted on an arrest warrant escaped custody while being transferred from one police agency to another northeast of Detroit.
The man, whose name was not released Sunday, ran into a wooded area Saturday near Interstate 94 and 26 Mile Road.
Clinton Township officers were turning him over to Marysville police when he broke free and escaped.
“He basically turned around and bolted from the officers into a wooded area,” Clinton Township police Capt. Bruce Wade said. “A canine and a helicopter were called out to assist in the search, but they did not locate him.”
Wade declined to say if the suspect was handcuffed at the time of his escape.
Clinton Township officers stopped the man earlier Saturday in Macomb County after getting reports of a suspicious person. A records check determined he was being sought by authorities in St. Clair County.
Wade said that when something like Saturday’s escape occurs, police officials “have to go back and take a real strict look at what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
