To the editor:
Brown County Weekend Backpacks (BCWB) is a community-led program whose goal is keeping hungry children fed with nutritious food all weekend long.
This summer, BCWB has become an incorporated nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. We are no longer under the Brown County Community Foundation. We want to thank the foundation for helping us in our first year of existence.
As a nonprofit we are planning an organization meeting to elect three executive officers and six board members. The public is invited to this organizational meeting on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Brown County Public Library.
Our slate of officers is Jan Swigert, president; Sandy Ridenour, secretary; Gloria Berryman, treasurer; Board of Directors: Harry Bond, Marylin Day, Sandy Higgins, Mark Lindenlaub, Donna Niednagel and Linda Todd. Nominations will be accepted at the meeting.
We will also report on the start of the backpack program for this school year.
On Fridays we deliver backpacks of food to Sprunica and Helmsburg elementary schools, Brown County Intermediate and Brown County Junior High School to be given to students on the free lunch program whose parents agree to be a part of this program.
Churches and individuals have helped us by donating specific food each month. Linda Todd, our food collection chair, is looking for more donors to help us. Contact Linda at 812-287-2489 or email@example.com.
Volunteers help us pack the backpacks on Wednesday afternoon. Donna Niednagel is our volunteer organizing chair. If you would like to join our volunteer teams, contact Donna at 812-988-6865 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for your caring of students in our Brown County schools.
Remember, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at the library to learn more about our organization and be a part of improving this important program.
The Chocolate Moose has offered to supply a taste of their ice cream for those who attend. There will also be a silent auction during the meeting.
Jan Swigert, BCWB president
