HAMBLEN TWP. — Two teen drivers crashed into each other on Sweetwater Trail Friday evening, Aug. 19, then slid into a Brown County Schools bus loaded with children.

No one was injured, including the children on the bus.

A witness told Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Bowling that bus driver Mark Henderson was northbound in the 5800 block with the bus’s yellow flashing lights activated, but the stop arm not out yet. She was southbound, and said she slowed for the bus, then saw the accident behind her.

Austin Blanton, 19, State Road 45, slowed suddenly because of the bus, and Shawnetta Gadd, 18, Sweetwater Drive, hit the back of his 1989 Chevy truck, the report said.

Blanton’s truck was then pushed into the bus, bumping it in the front driver’s side, the report said. Bowling’s report said the skid marks from Gadd’s Jeep Liberty were 64 feet long.

Superintendent Laura Hammack went to the accident scene, along with the assistant transportation director and a school nurse.

No children were getting off the bus at the time, she said. The children didn’t need to be transferred to another bus to finish their ride home.

As standard procedure, the driver was replaced “just in case he was shaken up,” Hammack said.

Gadd’s vehicle had to be towed.

No citations were issued, the report said.
