More swim lessons offered at state park pool

From 11 to 11:35 a.m. weekdays, Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 22, Brown County YMCA will provide swim lessons for $60 per child at the Brown County State Park pool.

Registration and payment are due at the Y, 105 Willow St., by Saturday, July 9.

Children will be separated by age/skill levels:

  • Preschool, 3 to 5 — Learn water entry, bubble blowing, flutter kick, back float and underwater exploration. Focus is on introduction to the water, with improved safety and comfort in the pool.
  • Beginner, 6 and older — For first-time swimmers, emphasis is on water adjustment, swimming readiness skills, basic safety, floating, kicking and arm strokes.
  • Intermediate — For children who know basic swim skills and are confident in the water, arm position, leg exercises and breathing will be practiced.

Parks and rec offers new golf outing

Registration for the first Brown County Wellness Commissioner Golf Outing is available through Brown County Parks and Recreation. The event at Salt Creek Golf Retreat, 2359 State Road 46 East, begins at noon Saturday, July 9, with registration at 11 a.m.

Registration costs $65 per community player or $45 per county employee player and includes 18 holes, a cart and a cook-out dinner.

Sponsorship opportunities include $100 each for a hole, hole-in-one and second-place team; $125 each for longest drive, closest to pin and longest putt; $200 for first-place team; and $300 each for foursome with hole and dinner sponsorship.

Hilly Half Marathon registration open

The Brown County YMCA is accepting early registration for its Hilly Half Marathon, Saturday, Nov. 12, which starts and finishes at the Saddle Barn/Lower Shelter in Brown County State Park.

Register by Sept. 30 for $50, which includes the park entrance fee. Registration goes up to $60 during October, and in November it costs $70 to be in the race.

Open gym times offered at local YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers open gym times for basketball, volleyball and pickleball for players age 16 and older from all ability levels, with informal, friendly games.

Basketball is offered 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays; volleyball is 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays.

Competitive pickleball is offered from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; social pickleball is from 1 to 3 p.m. the same days. Social pickleball is also offered from 6 to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturdays.

For players ages 50 and older, basketball and volleyball are offered from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Open gym hours are free for Y members and $3 per non-member.

Parks and rec wrestling now open to K-12 students

Registration is open for a new Brown County Parks and Recreation wrestling program for students in the sixth through 12th grades.

Practices will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sept. 29 in the wrestling room in the Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium at the high school.

The program’s focus is on basic skill development and improvement. Wrestlers also can compete in voluntary competitive meets throughout the year.

Golf scramble to fund free books for kids

A golf scramble Thursday, July 21, at Salt Creek Golf Retreat will benefit the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to children in Brown County age 5 and younger.

Zumba classes free for YMCA members

The Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., offers a Zumba class from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

The class is free for YMCA members. A $3 drop-in fee applies for nonmembers.
