Brown County ATV accident injures Seymour juvenile

A 12-year-old Seymour boy injured in an ATV accident Saturday in southern Brown County continues to recover from his injuries at an Indianapolis hospital.

Grainger Pollert underwent surgery for a broken jaw Monday afternoon and also has multiple skull fractures, his father, Richard Pollert, told the Seymour Tribune.

He sleeps a lot but has been awake and can move his extremities, his father added.

The youth was flown by a medical helicopter for treatment after the incident Saturday afternoon.

At around 3 p.m., emergency units responded to the 8000 block of Lutheran Lake Road for an ATV accident involving two juveniles.

The initial investigation revealed Pollert was riding a side-by-side ATV on the road when he attempted to turn but lost control, causing the ATV to leave the roadway, according to Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officers.

After leaving the roadway, the ATV flipped on its side, and Grainger hit his head on the ground, his father said.

A 16-year-old passenger was sore but not seriously injured, Richard Pollert said.

Grainger was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in Indianapolis. He was in serious but stable condition with head and chest injuries, according to the DNR news release.

A gofundme account has been established in Grainger’s name to raise money to help the family, which includes his mother, Joetta, and two older sisters, Brennyn Pollert and Alaysha Pollert, with expenses during his hospitalization.

The juveniles were not wearing helmets, protective gear or seat belts, according to the news release.

It is against the law to operate an ATV on any roadway in Brown County, according to the DNR.

The accident is still under investigation.

Van Buren Township Volunteer Fire Department, EMS and the Brown County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.
