A traffic stop on State Road 46 West on June 7 resulted in drug and alcohol arrests of two underage Columbus residents.

Nashville Police Officer Kyle Seward pulled over a blue Toyota driven by Michael Freed, 19, at the Brown County State Park west entrance for going 70mph in a 45mph zone.

Freed said he thought the speed limit was 55mph and that he and his passenger, Joseph T. Wright, 18, were on their way to Bloomington from Columbus, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Seward reported smelling marijuana and had them exit the vehicle. He searched both Freed and Wright, but found nothing illegal on them.

As Seward began searching the vehicle, Wright said he would find marijuana in a backpack that was in the back seat. Freed said there was alcohol in that backpack, too, the affidavit said.

A search of the backpack yielded a small, clear jar with a small amount of marijuana, a blue pipe with burnt marijuana in it, a 750 mL bottle of Jägermeister and 750 mL bottle of Jose Cuervo, Seward reported.

Wright did not test positive for alcohol, but Freed’s blood-alcohol content was 0.056, the report said.

Both were arrested and transported to the Brown County jail. On June 10, Freed was charged with illegal possession of an alcoholic beverage, a Class C misdemeanor. Wright was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
