SAN ANTONIO — A paralyzed Vietnam War veteran has died after his wish to see his horses was granted by a San Antonio hospital.

South Texas Veterans Health Care System said in a statement on behalf of 67-year-old Roberto Gonzalez’s family that he died Monday. He spent some time Saturday with two of his horses outside of Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital, where he was a patient. The horses were brought near Gonzalez, who was in a hospital bed.

He was paralyzed after being shot in Vietnam. His wife, Rosario Gonzalez, says he was wounded a few months after arriving in 1970. But the Premont man went on to raise and train horses.

She says her husband was being treated for a back wound and also had liver and kidney problems.
