NEW CASTLE, Del. — The Chemours Co., the financially struggling chemicals business spun off from the DuPont Co., is asking state officials for almost $8 million in taxpayer money.

Chemours is seeking a Strategic Fund grant of up to $7.2 million to retain 900 full-time jobs. It is also asking for a capital expenditure grant of up to $695,000 for a headquarters project in Wilmington.

The state Council on Development Finance was to consider the request at a meeting Monday.

Chemours is currently based in DuPont’s former headquarters in downtown Wilmington, but company officials have been considering whether to relocate.

State lawmakers quickly passed corporate income tax reforms earlier this year aimed at persuading Chemours to remain in Delaware and keeping corporate jobs in Delaware following the merger of DuPont and Dow Chemical Co.
