A man and a woman whom officers pulled over for following too closely behind another vehicle were arrested for possession of heroin.

Two Indiana State Troopers stopped Baron Wendling, 35, and Ashley Elkins, 23, on State Road 46 West near Oak Knoll Road on April 13. Wendling was driving a red Ford Ranger; Elkins was the passenger.

The officers had received an anonymous tip that a truck matching that description was westbound from Gnaw Bone, carrying heroin.

A third trooper brought a K-9 officer to check the vehicle and the dog indicated the presence of drugs at the driver’s door, the report said.

Trooper Riley Nungester searched Wendling and reported finding two cut straws with residue and two foil wrappers with a brown, powdery substance in his pants pockets.

On Elkins, Trooper Kent Rohlfing reported finding another piece of foil.

Wendling admitted to officers that they had just picked the heroin up and were on their way back to Elkins’ house, the report said.

Both were arrested and booked into the Brown County jail.

Elkins was officially charged April 25 with possession of narcotic drug. Charging information on Wendling was not available as of press time.
