The Brown County Council and Brown County Commissioners will meet in joint session at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 16 to discuss road funding and the possibility of raising the county wheel tax and vehicle surtax.

Wheel tax and surtax are paid when Hoosiers register or renew a vehicle. The revenue is split proportionately between the county and the town and must be spent on roads and bridges.

County wheel tax applies to large vehicles and trailers, and currently varies from $15 for a trailer to $40 for large trucks. The current county surtax, which applies to vehicles under 11,000 pounds, is 10 percent.

A new state law allows the county to raise the wheel tax to $80 and the surtax to 20 percent.

The Brown County League of Women Voters will assist with moderating discussion and presenting questions from the public, said league President Julie Winn. In addition, the league is assembling a panel involving subject matter experts to provide context for the discussion.
