MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two charter school operators are appealing the Shelby County Schools board’s revocation of their charters.
Media outlets report that the leaders of Omni Prep Lower and Middle schools and Southern Avenue Middle filed appeal paperwork with the Tennessee Board of Education this week. Along with another appeal from the New Consortium of Law and Business, they are the first charters to appeal their closures to the state board since charter schools came online in the state in 2003.
Omni Prep’s appeal says the school’s charter revocation is “ad hoc and conducted without due process or transparency.” Southern Avenue leaders said the board revoked charters arbitrarily and selectively.
Shelby County Schools says in a statement that the district respects the rights of the charters to appeal.
Appeal hearings for Omni Prep and Southern Middle are scheduled for May 18.
