Morgantown bridge closed indefinitely

MORGANTOWN — The Indiana Department of Transportation has closed the iron truss bridge just south of Morgantown on State Road 135 North indefinitely.

Brown County commissioner Diana Biddle said she received information from INDOT that a bridge inspector closed it due to stress damage.

On Oct. 28, a truck struck the bridge and it was closed for a couple days.

An inspector was examining the bridge in preparation for a planned seven-day closure this summer, but decided to close it immediately, Biddle said.

Since no contract had been bid out yet for the bridge project, the closing is for an indefinite length of time.

No detour was marked by INDOT; however Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner and highway crews are working to find detour signs and get them up, Biddle said.

Three Story Hill Road to Lick Creek Road is one alternate route. Spearsville Road, up toward Samaria on State Road 252, is another, Biddle said.

Detouring for this project is made more complicated because of the planned closure of State Road 45 at Lick Creek Road, which could happen as early as May 4. That bridge also is scheduled to be replaced. Read more about that project here: bcdemocrat.com/2016/04/18/state-road-45-to-close-west-of-helmsburg/
