ISHPEMING, Mich. — Layoff notices are being sent to employees at an iron ore mine in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which will close this year.
The Mining Journal (http://bit.ly/1V90vX2 ) says more than 300 workers are affected at the Empire Mine in Marquette County. Most will be laid off in August, although nearly 50 will be dismissed in May, followed by a similar number in July.
In March, Cliffs Natural Resources said the mine would close.
Spokeswoman Patricia Persico says the company acknowledges that the news is difficult for families and the community.
The Tilden Mine, which is also in Michigan, is expected to continue producing iron ore pellets for many years.
