Controlled burn goes out-of-control in wind

Firefighters from three departments were called to a controlled burn that went out-of-control on Salt Creek Road April 3.

Brown County (Nashville), Hamblen Township and Cordry Sweetwater volunteer firefighters were on scene for about an hour fighting the blaze as it moved quickly uphill due to the wind.

Brown County Chief Dallas “Dak” Kelp said the homeowner had been cleaning up his property and burning yard debris that morning when it was not as windy. That afternoon, the wind picked up and took the pile with it.

About one acre was burned.

No one was injured and no damages were reported.

Kelp encourages residents to be cautious while doing spring cleanup outside and to watch the weather.

“When they say, ‘Hey, it’s going to be another windy day today,’ you might want to hold off on burning. Things are starting to green up, but until things get really green, it’s not a very good idea to be burning either,” Kelp said.
