VA clinic offers health services in Edinburgh; public meeting planned

A new clinic near Edinburgh is offering medical services to veterans, and officials want to let more people know.

The Wakeman VA Clinic, which opened in early February near Camp Atterbury, offers multiple medical and mental health services to local veterans, including physical therapy, a mental health care center and Tele-Health, which supports long-distance health care, said Pete Scovill, a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spokesman.

During the next few years, the 12,000-square-foot clinic will expand services, adding optometry, ophthalmology, audiology and general X-rays, he said.

This month, officials plan to host a public meeting to answer questions and tell veterans about the new clinic, and a dedication ceremony.

All veterans, including those not receiving health benefits or enrolled at other VA facilities, are eligible for treatment at the Wakeman VA Clinic. The new clinic is in two adjacent buildings on 10th Street in the Camp Atterbury complex, near Edinburgh.

The new clinic was intended to:

  • Reduce driving time by moving health care closer to veterans, especially for those in rural areas of south central Indiana.
  • Increase available space at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis for enhancing specialty and inpatient services.
  • Address a federal mandate to link primary, mental health and supporting specialties.

The idea of creating the Wakeman VA Clinic began in 2014 with meetings between officials from Camp Atterbury and the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Jennings County. A partnership developed over the next year with the goal of finding new purposes for existing military buildings to provide veteran health care, the release stated.
