DES MOINES, Iowa — Fire officials say controlled burns outside the city have left Des Moines enshrouded in a smoky haze.

Television station KCCI ( ) says the haze Saturday morning led several people to call the fire department and police.

Des Moines Fire Dept. Capt. Mark Dooley says fire officials have spoken with meteorologists, who say an inversion and lack of wind have left the smoky haze over the city.

A KCCI meteorologist says winds are expected pick up Saturday afternoon to about 10 to 15 mph, which should clear out the haze.

Health officials say older adults, children and those with respiratory issues may experience some breathing difficulties and advise those people to limit their time outside while the haze persists.
