DALLAS — Two former San Antonio day care operators accused of forcing their three adopted children to sleep in a shower, bite each other and pour bleach on wounds will spend decades behind bars for abuse discovered in 2012.

Five years earlier, a state agency moved two foster children from the home following abuse concerns.

The case highlights long-standing questions about the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, which a federal judge ruled last year was unconstitutionally broken.

Bexar County sheriff’s investigator Tony Kobryn says the case involving Tim and Iliana Archuleta was among the worst he’s seen.

The couple and Tim Archuleta’s nephew have pleaded no contest to a variety of charges. Tim Archuleta is the last to be sentenced and faces 20 years when he appears in court Wednesday.
