COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley says a solicitor and a county councilman should both resign following their drunken driving arrests.
Lexington County prosecutor Donnie Meyers was arrested last week after troopers found his empty car crashed into a utility pole near his home. It is Meyers’ third alcohol-related charge since 2005. He was first elected solicitor in 1976.
Richland County Councilman Kelvin Washington was charged with felony DUI after crashing into the back of another car Saturday evening. The driver of the other car was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The governor can remove people from office in limited circumstances. Haley says she’s exploring her options if the two don’t step down voluntarily.
She says it’s a problem when any elected official believes they’re above the law.
