BREINIGSVILLE, Pa. — Authorities say more than one person has died in an accident involving a car and a tractor-trailer on an eastern Pennsylvania highway.

Officials in Lehigh County said the crash happened in Upper Macungie Township on Route 222 near the intersection with Route 100 at about 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Township police chief Edgardo Colon said there were “multiple fatalities” in what he called “a very, very tragic accident.”

Colon told The (Easton) Express-Times that witnesses reported that a vehicle heading north on Route 222 crossed the median into the path of the southbound truck, and both vehicles were then engulfed in flames.

The Lehigh County coroner’s office confirmed that it had responded to the crash but had no immediate information about fatalities.
